{Prayers for Our Nation // A Flag Day Devotion}

There’s something deeply stirring about the sight of a flag fluttering in the Texas wind. It’s more than just fabric on a pole...it’s a symbol of sacrifice, freedom, and the blessings we so often take for granted. On this Flag Day, I felt led to pause, reflect, and pray for our nation.

As believers, we know that while we live in this country temporarily, our true citizenship is in Heaven (Philippians 3:20). But that doesn't mean we take lightly the responsibility and privilege of praying for our earthly home. Scripture reminds us in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NIV):

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness."

In that spirit, I wanted to share a few simple prayers this Flag Day; prayers for our country, our leaders, and those who defend the freedoms we hold so dearly.

A Prayer for the United States
Lord, thank You for the gift of living in a free country. Even in the midst of challenges and division, help us not to lose sight of Your presence and Your purpose for this land. Heal our nation, bring unity where there is division, and raise up godly people to lead in every corner of society. Let Your justice, mercy, and love be the heartbeat of our country. Amen.

A Prayer for Our Leaders
Father, we lift up the leaders of this nation...from our president to local officials. Give them wisdom, discernment, and hearts that seek truth and righteousness. May they lead with integrity, humility, and courage. Remind them, and us, that true leadership begins with servanthood. Amen.

A Prayer for Our Military Families
God, thank You for the brave men and women who serve in our armed forces. Bless and protect them as they stand on the frontlines for our freedom. Comfort their families...the spouses, children, and parents who sacrifice so much. Wrap them in Your peace and remind them they are never alone. Amen.

May we be people who honor not just our flag, but the One who gives us freedom, both earthly and eternal.

Let’s be a generation that prays boldly, loves deeply, and leads with grace.

Happy Flag Day, friends. May God bless you, and may God bless America.
