{From the Front Porch // Thunder & Hummingbirds}

This evening, I found myself drawn to the front porch...the air heavy with the promise of rain, the clouds just starting to roll in. I brought out my devotional and coffee, not expecting a holy moment, but that’s exactly what I got.

I sat in the stillness, the kind that only comes right before a storm, when everything seems to pause. I could hear the low rumble of thunder in the distance...strong, mighty, commanding attention. At the same time, the soft flutter of wings caught my ear. A hummingbird zipped past, delicate and determined, making its way to our flower bush just a few feet from me.

And there it was.

Thunder and hummingbirds.

Power and gentleness.

Strength and beauty.

All in one moment.

It reminded me so much of God.

Sometimes, we only focus on one side of His character. We think of Him as mighty and powerful, like the thunder...able to shake mountains and part seas. And He is. But He’s also gentle, intentional, and present in the quiet...like the hummingbird, unnoticed by most but steady and full of life.

This front porch moment reminded me that the fullness of God holds both.

He is the God who calms the storm and the God who sends the rain.

He is the God of justice and mercy.

He is the God who created the thunder to roll and the hummingbird to hover.

And somehow, those things don’t contradict...they complement.

Maybe today, you’re feeling overwhelmed by the “thunder” in your life...the noise, the unknown, the things that feel bigger than you. But don’t miss the hummingbird. Don’t miss the moments of peace, of beauty, of God’s whisper tucked into your ordinary day.

I closed my devotional with a smile and a heart a little more settled than when I sat down. All because God met me on the front porch...with thunder in the sky and a hummingbird at the bush they love so much.

He’s always speaking.

Sometimes it just takes sitting still long enough to hear both the roar and the flutter.

From my front porch to yours...
