{Texas Tuesday // The Mysterious Marfa Lights}

 If you’re a fan of strange phenomena and Texas-sized mysteries, the Marfa Lights are a must-see on your travel list. Nestled in the high desert of West Texas near the tiny town of Marfa, these glowing orbs have fascinated visitors and locals alike for over a century.

What are the Marfa Lights?
The Marfa Lights are mysterious balls of light that appear at night on the horizon near the Chinati Mountains. They shimmer, change colors, and move in ways that seem to defy explanation. Some say they look like flickering lanterns, while others describe them as floating orbs that dance in the sky.

Theories & Legends:
No one knows for sure what causes the Marfa Lights. Some explanations are scientific, suggesting they might be atmospheric reflections or car headlights seen from a distance. But the legends make it far more fun! Local folklore says these lights could be the spirits of Native Americans, lost cowboys, or even UFOs.

Where to see the lights:
The best place to view the Marfa Lights is from the official Marfa Lights Viewing Area, located about 9 miles east of the town of Marfa on Highway 90. The spot has parking, picnic tables, and benches so you can settle in and watch as night falls.

Tips for your visit:
  • Bring a blanket or lawn chair
  • Pack some snacks & drinks
  • Be patient - the lights don't always appear right away
  • Visit during a clear night for best viewing conditions

Why visit Marfa?
Besides the lights, Marfa itself is an artsy, quirky town with great food, unique shops, and incredible desert landscapes. It’s the perfect Texas road trip destination where mystery meets culture.

Our experience in Marfa:
My family and I had the chance to visit Marfa in October of 2021. We were so excited to try and spot the famous lights ourselves. While we didn’t get lucky enough to see them that night, the sky put on its own kind of show...we saw so many stars, it was absolutely breathtaking. Even though the lights stayed hidden, we had such a fun time hanging out at the viewing area, scanning the horizon, and soaking in the peaceful desert night.
