It’s time for another Wednesday Hodgepodge, and this one is right up my alley! All things fall? Yes please! Fall is hands-down one of my favorite times of year and I am so ready for it. I don’t know what it is, but the minute September rolls in, I’m craving cooler temps, cozy sweaters, pumpkins on the porch, and all the soups and chilis simmering on the stove. Even though Texas doesn’t give us the dramatic color changes some places get, I still find ways to soak in every bit of fall. Whether it’s pulling out my seasonal decor, sipping on a pumpkin spice latte, or just sitting on the porch watching a sunset with a blanket around my shoulders, this season feels like a big warm hug. So, let’s dive into this week’s Hodgepodge and talk all things fall!
1. Fall officially rolls into the Northern Hemisphere on Monday (9/22)...what's your favorite thing about fall?
What is there not to love about fall? Truly, I love it all! Pumpkin everything, fall festivals, pumpkin patches, college football, and those first cooler mornings that beg you to grab a blanket and sit on the porch. I love soups and chilis simmering on the stove, camping in the crisp air, and of course...our annual Hocus Pocus night. The clothes are always a favorite too...give me boots, sweaters, and flannels any day. NHL season starting back up makes it even better, and I’m never one to turn down a seasonal drink (hello pumpkin cream cold brew!). The little glimpses of color change we get here are pretty, but I especially love seeing the big show when we travel.
2. What's one thing on your real or proverbial autumn bucket list?
One thing I would absolutely love is to go somewhere that actually feels like fall. Somewhere with cooler temps and real color change. Bonus points if there’s a little small-town square decorated with pumpkins and mums...that would make my heart so happy! I’m not sure yet if our hockey schedule will allow for a fall getaway this year, but it’s definitely still on my wishlist.
3. Apples, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, and cranberries are some of the top fall foods. Which one is your favorite and how do you like it prepared? Any on the list you don't eat? Which one have you had most recently?
I honestly love everything on this list! But if I had to choose, I’d probably pick pumpkin and sweet potatoes. I love sweet potatoes when they’re topped with sweet toppings...butter, cinnamon, brown sugar, marshmallows...the works! Pumpkin is my other love...I’ve already had my fair share of pumpkin spice lattes this season, and just last weekend I baked a batch of pumpkin spice muffins. So good!
4. 'Fall is proof that change is beautiful' is a popular sentiment. Would you agree or no? Elaborate.
I would definitely agree! There’s something about the way the leaves change and the seasons shift that reminds us that change can be a beautiful process. Even when things look different, there’s beauty and purpose in it. Fall feels like such a visual reminder that transitions in life don’t have to be scary or unwelcome...they can actually be filled with color, warmth, and blessing. The leaves falling may look like an ending, but in reality, it’s preparing the way for new growth to come in spring. In the same way, the changes in our own lives often bring lessons, gratitude, and fresh perspective that we couldn’t have gained otherwise. To me, fall is God’s gentle way of slowing us down and reminding us that change is part of His design...and that there’s beauty to be found in every season.
5. Is there a spot near you where people go to see the leaves change color? Will you try to leaf peep somewhere this fall? Lonely Planet lists the following ten places as the best for leaf peeping...of those listed which would you most like to visit?
We usually travel east of us about an hour and a half in late fall (technically for the Polar Express, but we try to go early before the Christmas busyness hits). The drive always surprises me with how much more color change they get compared to here at home. Mason and I always point out the pretty leaves on the drive...it’s such a simple thing, but we both enjoy it so much. Then we go around the camping area and look at all the fallen leaves!
As far as the list goes, honestly every single place sounds amazing. I’d be thrilled to visit any of them someday.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
I can’t tell you how much fun I’ve been having drafting fall posts lately. My fall-loving heart is in its happy place with all the cozy, pumpkin-y, autumn vibes. There’s just so much to love about this season, and writing about it makes me enjoy it even more.
Tell me...do you draft your blog posts ahead of time, or do you wing it each day? I currently have 50 blog posts drafted (seasonal, devotions for my Sunday series, Texas Tuesday series, etc). I've been on a writing kick lately. It's therapeutic for me and the creative juices have definitely been flowing.
A little preview...
And that’s a wrap on this week’s Hodgepodge! My fall-loving heart is just so happy after answering these questions, and it makes me even more excited for the season ahead. I love how this link-up always gives us a chance to slow down, reflect, and share a little bit of our lives in such a fun and meaningful way.
As always, I’m linking up with Joyce at From This Side of the Pond. Joyce, thank you for faithfully hosting each week and for giving us such a sweet space to connect and build community.
Friends, if you’ve been reading along but haven’t joined yet, I highly encourage you to jump in...it’s such a blessing! Until next time, I’ll be over here with a pumpkin candle burning, planning our next hockey weekend, and soaking up every cozy bit of fall. 🍁
