There’s something about fall that just begs for cozy evenings at home, candles flickering, soup simmering on the stove, and soft blankets close by. One of my favorite ways to make our home feel like fall is to whip up a simple DIY simmer pot. It’s natural, inexpensive, and fills every corner of the house with the most wonderful fragrance. Think of it like a hug for your senses!
While the stores are full of autumn-scented candles (and don’t get me wrong, I love them, too!), a simmer pot has its own special charm. There’s something intentional about slicing fresh fruit, sprinkling in spices, and letting it all gently bubble away. And every time I catch that warm, spicy aroma, I’m reminded of God’s goodness in the simple things... even in the fragrance of His creation.
What You’ll Need
-
1 apple, sliced
-
1 orange, sliced
-
3–4 cinnamon sticks
-
1 tablespoon whole cloves
-
1 tablespoon whole allspice
-
A few sprigs of fresh rosemary (optional but so good!)
-
6 cups of water
How to Make It
-
Add all your ingredients to a medium-sized pot.
-
Fill the pot with water, making sure the fruit and spices are covered.
-
Bring to a boil, then reduce to the lowest setting and let it gently simmer.
-
As the water evaporates, add more water as needed to keep the fragrance going.
Tips & Variations
-
Switch the apple for a pear for a slightly different sweetness.
-
Add star anise for a beautiful licorice note (and it looks so pretty in the pot!).
-
For a festive twist, toss in a handful of cranberries closer to the holidays.
-
Use a small crockpot on “low” if you’d rather not keep the stove on.
There’s no wrong way to do a simmer pot...it’s all about what smells like “fall” to you. For me, it’s apples, oranges, cinnamon, and cloves mingling together to create that cozy, autumn hug.
This little practice also helps me slow down and savor the season. As the aroma fills our home, I’m reminded to pause, to give thanks for God’s blessings big and small, and to enjoy the gift of this moment.
So, if you’re looking for an easy way to bring fall into your home, I highly recommend giving this simmer pot a try. Light a candle, put on some soft worship music or a cozy fall playlist, and let the fragrance remind you of God’s goodness in every season. 🍂
