Broken Bow, Day 3: Fishing, Hiking, and Train Rides Through the Pines
Day three of our Broken Bow getaway was one for the books—full of fresh air, familiar trails, and the kind of simple fun that fills your heart more than any screen ever could. We spent the day exploring Beaver’s Bend State Park, a place that holds decades of memories for our family. From fishing in the clear waters to hiking along the riverbanks and capping the evening with a scenic train ride, it was the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation
The hike itself was one of the best parts of the day. We laughed, wandered, and paused often to look at moss-covered trees, interesting rock formations, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife. Broken Bow is full of so much untouched beauty and endless opportunities to explore. You never see the same thing twice, and every visit reveals something new.
Once we made our way back, we found a good spot to watch Nate fish some more, and just enjoyed the calm. There’s something peaceful about watching him cast out into the river, surrounded by trees and sunlight. Before we left the area, we made sure to snap a few family photos—because capturing those memories is just as important as making them.
Next up was a trip to the Indian Hole, a spot that’s deeply tied to our family’s traditions. It’s changed quite a bit in recent years, especially after a big flood that led to some major renovations. The area looks different now, but it still holds the same charm and quiet beauty. Watching Nate try his luck fishing there brought back so many memories of trips past—when we were younger, before kids, and now, making those same memories with Mason right alongside us.
After soaking up all we could from the park, we made our way to one of our favorite little traditions—the Beaver’s Bend train ride. It’s a nostalgic ride through the forest, a slow-paced journey that somehow always feels magical. We bundled up with coats, gloves, and plenty of blankets because the cold was definitely setting in! But there’s something cozy about being tucked in together on the train, watching the woods go by, waving at strangers on horseback, and spotting deer as they dart between the trees. It’s one of those simple pleasures that reminds you how good it is to just be together.
As the sun started to dip behind the mountains, we made our way back to the cabin. That evening was spent the way we love most—with good food, comfy clothes, and a table full of games. The cabin was warm, the laughter was loud, and the company was the best kind. It’s these slow, sweet evenings that really seal in the joy of trips like this.
Day three in Broken Bow reminded me of why this place feels so special—why it’s more than just a vacation spot. It’s a place where the past and present meet, where our family roots run deep, and where every trail feels like home.
