Hall Around Texas - 12 handy apps to have for camping

Ultimately when we are camping we like to disconnect from social media and forget about our cell phones for a while. But, there are times when we do use them and when they come handy. Not only do we use them for taking pictures on the go, but also for so many great camping/outdoor apps we have found. Below I am sharing 12 handy apps to have while camping.

When we want to try some place new we use the Camp Finder app. With the latest information on over 19,000 campgrounds or RV parks/resorts from private campgrounds, National Parks and Forests, State Parks, etc you can find the perfect place for you and your family. You can also check out photos of camp sites, reviews, rates, amenities, etc. I may have used this app to start a campground bucket-list.

I'm an over-packer. Always have been and probably always will be. But even so, I sometimes forget a necessity when packing for camping. Enter the Camping List app and never forget anything you would need for camping ever again. It's pre-loaded with suggestions for clothes, cooking, personal, equipment, safety, etc. I love that you can create as many lists as you want and even save them for future trips.

Preparing for a camping trip is enough work in itself and meal planning can be daunting. The Coleman Camping Cookbook app takes away the stress of planning meals while camping. You can search by meal type, category or ingredients.

First Aid by American Red Cross - Free

Accidents happen. Especially if you're accident prone like me. Also, bug bites happen. Mason and I are bug magnets when we go camping. This app offers step by step advice for those little camping mishaps. It's also integrated with 9-1-1 so that you can dial at anytime straight from the app.

Accuweather - Weather for Life - Free

There is nothing worse than setting up camp only for it to start raining shortly after. With this app you can be prepared with what to expect weather wise. This app offers minute by minute updates on precipitation at your exact location. I also love that you can turn on severe weather alerts. And my favorite is that it features a 15 day forecast.

MyNature Animal Tracks - $1.99

We love to get out and explore with Mason while camping and one of our favorite things to do is animal footprint tracking. The MyNature Animal Tracks app helps you to easily identify what kind of animal left the prints. It's also very helpful in letting you know if you need to run or not...

StarWalk Astronomy Guide - $2.99
Stargazing app that helps you identify stars, constellations and planets. You can point your iPhone at the sky you can find out what you are looking at.

Geocaching - Free
If you're not familiar with Geocaching, it is a global treasure hunt. Participants leave small treasures in a container (geocache) for others to find and then record their coordinates to the app. You can either hide or seek geocaches. This is quickly becoming one of our favorite things to do! Especially while camping. Geocaching is an app acts as your map to find hidden treasures!  My friend Sara shared a great post on Geocaching with Kids, here.

Map My Hike - Free
This app uses your phones sensors to track your hike and workout (duration, distance, pace, speed, elevation, calories burned, route, etc.) on an interactive map. You can also search nearby routes.

Flashlight - Free
App uses your phones LED light to fill the screen with a bright light. This comes in handy during those times you forget the flashlight, or need a 2nd light source.

 Sun Seeker - $9.99

App that tracks the sun. I think this app is used mostly for the {wannabe} photographer in me. I want to know when to catch that dreamy golden hour! The app has a flat view compass as well as a 3-D view.

Spotify - Free
We use Spotify to listen to music while traveling to our camping destination as well as when we are hanging out around the campsite. Just hook it up to a blue tooth speaker and you are good to go!

Are you an avid camper? What are your must-have apps?
