{Chasing Bluebonnets: A Spring Tradition}

Every spring, without fail, there’s one tradition that pulls at my heart a little more than the rest: a trip out to the bluebonnets. There’s just something about those soft fields of Texas blooms stretching under the sky that fills my heart and soul in the most peaceful way. It’s not just about the flowers—it’s about the pause, the stillness, and the reminder that beauty doesn’t need to shout to be noticed.

This year, though, the timing was a little trickier. Between our packed schedules and all the rain, we ended up heading out later in the season than we usually do. I’ll admit I was a little nervous we’d missed our window, and sure enough, there weren’t many bluebonnets left in bloom. But something about the simplicity of the moment made it special in a different way—less about the perfect photo op and more about simply being there.

We parked by one of my favorite spots, where the wildflowers usually put on a good show. And while the bluebonnets were sparse, the land still held that same gentle peace. The kind that makes you take a deep breath and forget, just for a while, about to-do lists and timelines.

One thing I was especially looking forward to this year was seeing the Highland cow that lives in the pasture behind the gate. I waited for a while, camera ready, hoping it might wander a little closer. It stayed back, content in its own little world, just grazing and minding its business—but honestly, I didn’t mind. It was fun just to watch from afar, soaking in the calm pace of the animal and the quiet of the field.

That’s the thing about these little traditions—they don’t always go perfectly, but they always mean something. Even when the flowers are few, the ground is muddy, or the cows won’t come say hello, it’s still a gift to take time and chase a bit of beauty. The peace it brings is worth every extra mile.

So no, this year wasn’t the most stunning bluebonnet backdrop we’ve ever had—but in its own quiet way, it was just as lovely. And I left feeling just as full, just as grounded, and already looking forward to next spring.
