{Vacation Recap - Galveston, TX}

Nathan has been working 7 days a week lately. When his work told him that they were not working overtime the weekend of July 4th we knew we wanted to get out of town for a while. We jumped and booked our trip before they could change their mind.

So, Thursday morning Mason, Nathan and I headed down to the coast {Texas Gulf Coast}. We left around 7:45 am and made great timing! Even with a 25ish minute stop at Bucees we arrived at our hotel in La Porte, TX at 11:30! Such a smooth, easy drive. Mason did so great!!

We unloaded our luggage and then headed to Galveston. It was around 25 miles from our hotel, but with the traffic and stop lights it took about 40 minutes! We headed straight for the Pleasure Pier.  We got Mason and Nathan an all day ride pass. They work you that way....they make the kiddie rides just to the height where most would need an adult to ride with them. Nonetheless, Mason had a wonderful time.

We were at Pleasure Pier a good 2.5 hours and then headed to lunch at Fish Tales by recommendation of Christine!  It was fabulous!! And right across from the water. Such wonderful views. After lunch we went on a Duck tour. Mason was excited to be in an old military vehicle! He ended up falling asleep before our tour was over. He was exhausted after such a long day!

We tried to check out a man-made beach by our hotel, but it was fourth of July and they were having fireworks so it was impossible to get to! So, we just grabbed dinner and went back to the hotel. Early bedtime for us.

Friday morning we woke up headed over to Sylvan Beach for a bit. We were blown away with how trashed the beach was from the night before {4th of July festivities}. There was all kinds of stuff covering the beach. We found a spot that was clear, but we still didn't feel very comfortable there. There were beer bottles and all sorts of other trash. We didn't stay too long.

Next we visited the Kemah Boardwalk. I didn't take my camera because we had planned on taking a boat ride that got everyone wet. But at the last minute we changed our mind and went on a cruise ship type of boat. So, I have no pictures {except the ones from Instragram} of our time at Kemah. It was a ton of fun, though! Mason played games and we rode the train through the park. He also loved the hour long cruise ship ride.

That evening we drove to the beach. Galveston Beach on the seawall was so incredibly packed that we had to drive a good ways before we found a beach that wasn't so crowded. We were almost to San Luis Pass when we found an okay spot! We spent a good 3 or so hours at the beach. Mason was having a complete blast and wasn't scared of the ocean one bit. He'd just take off running into the ocean and would let the waves do their thing! It as awesome to watch. He's definitely our beach baby!!!

We tried to go back to the boardwalk after the beach to eat on a patio and watch fireworks. But even at 2.5 hours early, we still couldn't get a table. So we grabbed fast food and went back to the hotel.

Saturday morning we went to Rainforest Cafe for lunch. It's one of our favorite restaurants in Galveston. Mason of course loves the shop and the animals. But, they also have a little cave/water ride there too! We had a good time there. But this is where Mason started to have an upset tummy {before our lunch came}. After lunch we tried going to the Strand...but couldn't find any parking at all! Bummer. I could have done some good shopping there!! But, it's kind of a good thing because Mason's tummy was off all day. We did go to the San Jacinto Battlegrounds...which I posted about on a Texas Tuesday post here.

I'm not sure if it was drainage from allergies, swallowing too much ocean water, or a tummy bug but Mason had an upset stomach all day. He didn't act like he felt bad, but couldn't keep anything in {not throwing up, but the other}. Poor guy! We took it easy for the rest of the day and stayed close to the hotel.

Sunday morning we checked out of our hotel and drove back to Galveston to go to some beach shops. Mason wanted some souvenirs. Those shops were so stinkin crowded. It was honestly a big waste of time!

The drive home wasn't as great as the drive down there. Mason thought he had to potty a couple of times so we stopped {in houston, where it's not so easy to do so}. And then there was traffic and wrecks galore! We didn't get home until 6:45 that evening! Wowsa!

All in all, it was an amazing trip and perfect 1st family vacation!!! Nathan, Mason and I have been on many vacations, but this was the first with just us 3. We made a lot of great memories.

Have you been on Summer vacation? Where did you go? Or do you have one planned? Share with me?

{Night Terrors}

There is nothing I hate more than to wake up to Mason screaming, kicking and thrashing out. Even though he's had several of these episodes it never gets easier. It still scares the fire out of me. And my heart sinks a little more with each terror. I pray for the day we do not have to face these anymore.

What are night Terrors??

A night terror is a sleep disruption that seems similar to a nightmare, but with a far more dramatic presentation. Though night terrors can be alarming for parents who witness them, they're not usually cause for concern or a sign of a deeper medical issue.
During a typical night, sleep occurs in several stages. Each is associated with particular brain activity, and it's during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage that most dreaming occurs.

Night terrors happen during deep non-REM sleep. Unlike nightmares (which occur during REM sleep), a night terror is not technically a dream, but more like a sudden reaction of fear that happens during the transition from one sleep phase to another.
Night terrors usually occur about 2 or 3 hours after a child falls asleep, when sleep transitions from the deepest stage of non-REM sleep to lighter REM sleep, a stage where dreams occur. Usually this transition is a smooth one. But rarely, a child becomes agitated and frightened — and that fear reaction is a night terror.

During a night terror, a child might suddenly sit upright in bed and shout out or scream in distress. The child's breathing and heartbeat might be faster, he or she might sweat, thrash around, and act upset and scared. After a few minutes, or sometimes longer, a child simply calms down and returns to sleep.

Unlike nightmares, which kids often remember, kids won't have any memory of a night terror the next day because they were in deep sleep when it happened — and there are no mental images to recall.

What Causes Night Terrors?

Night terrors are caused by over-arousal of the central nervous system (CNS) during sleep. This may happen because the CNS (which regulates sleep and waking brain activity) is still maturing. Some kids may inherit a tendency for this over-arousal — about 80% who have night terrors have a family member who also experienced them or sleepwalking (a similar type of sleep disturbance).
Night terrors have been noted in kids who are:
  • overtired or ill, stressed, or fatigued
  • taking a new medication
  • sleeping in a new environment or away from home
Night terrors are relatively rare — they happen in only 3-6% of kids, while almost every child will have a nightmare occasionally. Night terrors usually occur between the ages of 4 and 12, but have been reported in kids as young as 18 months. They seem to be a little more common among boys.
A child might have a single night terror or several before they cease altogether. Most of the time, night terrors simply disappear on their own as the nervous system matures.

The facts about 7/13:

Bed @ 11:30 pm
Terror @ 2:50 am
Lasted 10ish minutes
Kicking/crying/screaming

We went to Chuck E Cheese on Saturday. I know without a doubt that is the reason for this particular night terror. Over-stimulation to the highest!! Dang you Chuck E Cheese!!!! Combine that with a late bedtime and bam!

In his night terrors he was saying things like, "I want a different prize" or "over here" or 'that one".

What helps us?

Stay calm
Be patient
Talk as little as possible and when we do talk we talk with soft voice
Keep them safe - move anything out of the way that may hurt them as they thrash it out

We've only learned this after 2.5 years of him having them. Usually Mason gets these after a major transition, or every 3-6 months. This one was a little different for the fact that it happened almost 3.5 hours after he went to sleep. Usually they're like clockwork - 90 minutes after going to sleep.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While we were in the Galveston area on vacation {full recap to come} we visited the Battlegrounds of San Jacinto. I absolutely loved it. I'm a history nerd, what can I say!  The ship - AMAZING. The monuments - BREATHTAKING! I wish we could have spent more time here!
The Battle of San Jacinto, fought on April 21, 1836, in present-day Harris County, Texas, was the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Led by General Sam Houston, the Texian Army engaged and defeated General Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican army in a fight that lasted just 18 minutes. About 630 of the Mexican soldiers were killed and 730 captured, while only 9 Texans died.[3]
Santa Anna, the President of Mexico, was captured the following day and held as a prisoner of war. Three weeks later, he signed the peace treaty that dictated that the Mexican army leave the region, paving the way for the Republic of Texas to become an independent country. These treaties did not specifically recognize Texas as a sovereign nation, but stipulated that Santa Anna was to lobby for such recognition in Mexico City. Sam Houston became a national celebrity, and the Texans' rallying cries, "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!" became etched into Texas history and legend.
Happy Sunday friends!!
This is where we are spending our Sunday and Monday.
Have you ever been to a Jellystone Park?
{Friday Randoms}
Happy Friday Friends!!!
This has been a craaaaazy week. We got back from our vacation on Sunday at 6:45. So then it was crunch time to get ready for the week. Nate's Mom kept Mason on Monday and Tuesday because we hear that there was some sort of stomach bug going around his school. We wanted to avoid it. So, that helped take some time and duties out of my mornings.
But, Tuesday morning I had a car accident. :( Boo! Everyone was okay. It was just me and another car. It was technically my fault because of the position of the accident. I'm just thankful that everyone was okay and that Mason was not in the car with me. I was alone, on my way to work. Car is in the shop now with no time frame of when it might be done. Just glad it's getting taken care of.
So thankful the Lord's mercies are new every morning!!
The rest of the week has just flown by! Work has been busy and we've been busy in the evenings getting the house back in order from our trip! The boys did take a dip in the pool. Mason loves the water.
Mason has been on such good behavior this week. So we have been having really great/calm evenings. Love that! And now we are gearing up for a busy weekend.
How was your week?
Any plans for the weekend?
{What I love about right now}
- The conversations I get to have with Mason to and from school
- How Mason loves to sing and settles for nothing less than loud
- Cooking together
- Looking at all of our vacation pictures and the smile on Mason's face
- Family time; playing outside, swimming, hanging out on the porch
- Mason playing 'fetch' with Lucy and giggling his little heart out
- The way he calls Mason "little sister" or "little stinker"
- Sweet Summertime
- Making memories
- Bedtime giggles
- Love
{Vacation Instagram Pictures}
Mondays are SO hard. Especially the Monday after a fabulous mini-vacation!! Nathan, Mason and I had so much freakin' fun in Galveston. We are ready to go back!!
I will have a full recap on the blog once I upload the pictures from my camera...but for now, Instagram pictures!
How was your 4th of July? What did you do?
{Friday Randoms}
Happy Friday y'all!!! This was a short week for me. I worked Monday, Tuesday and only a half day on Wednesday. Yeahhhh! After last week, I have been looking forward to this week like crazy!!!
Not only because it was a short week...but because Nate, Mason and I headed to the beach early Thursday morning {I'm writing this on Tuesday as if it's Friday! ha} This is our first family vacation with just us three EVER! We've been on plenty of vacations, but none where it's just our little family. We are kind of excited.
Monday after work we headed over to Cedar Hill {about 35 minutes from our house} to pick this up....
Nate has been wanting one for a couple of years. And goodness the man deserves it! He's been working 7 days a week for over a month now. His program at work is so busy. And not gonna lie, the overtime is greatness! It's helped us pay off a lot of bills. He's pretty excited to try it out this week at the beach!
Every day we have been counting down with Mason until our trip. This was our 'Excited only 1 day left' face...
Also this week my sister asked us if we'd like to adopt this sweet little guy....
 He's a full blooded black lab. This picture is a couple of months old. So, obviously he is a little bigger now! He will be 4 months old on 7/14. He has a very good temperament and is pretty calm for a puppy. We are a Lab family, so of course we said yes! I can't wait to get him home with us. Since we're on vacation we probably wont get him until Sunday. His current name is Tyler....but he's young enough that we can change that. I will announce his new name next week.
My Mother-in-law booked us a cabin at Beavers Bend for Labor Day weekend. I am so excited! It's right on the river and is just rustic and perfect!!! I can't wait.
 {all pictures via}
That's about all I have for now! As you're reading this we are probably on a some beach some where!!
Happy Weekend friends!!!
XOXO
